Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego, answered and said to the king, O Nebuchadnezzar, we are not careful to answer thee in this matter.
If it be so, our God whom we serve is able to deliver us from the burning fiery furnace, and he will deliver us out of thine hand, O king. But if not, be it known unto thee, O king, that we will not serve thy gods, nor worship the golden image which thou hast set up. – Dan 3:16-18
What a very powerful passage of scripture. For a quick summary; this is the account where the king threatens to throw three men into a burning furnace of fire because they will not bow down and worship his foreign gods.
As the passage continues these are in fact thrown into the fiery furnace and the Lord personally stands in the midst of the fire with them, and they are unharmed. Christ is the fourth man in the fire.
It is a great testimony of Faith when we stand in the face of adversity and declare to our adversaries that God is able to deliver us, as these men do.
We usually measure our faith by what we can “do” in the holy spirit, or what prayers we are able to see answered. But, I want to suggest that these men were on a completely different level in some ways.
It is certainly amazing that these had the faith to stand and proclaim the ability of God, and the certainty that they would surely be delivered from the wicked king’s hand.
But, let me bring your attention to the last proclamation they make before being thrown into the furnace that was seven times hotter than the average.
“But if not…”
In the face of certain death, they knew God was able to deliver them yet, still they declare:
“But if not, be it known unto thee, O king, that we will not serve thy gods, nor worship the golden image which thou hast set up.”
To put this in plain English they looked the evil king in the eyes and said:
“Even if he don’t show up…. we still will not serve you!”
Wow! What a mighty testimony of faith in the Lord. To proclaim that God is able and to know he is paying attention, but to say in the midst of it all… “Even if he don’t…” I will still not deny him.
Job says it this way “Though he slay me, yet will I trust in him…”(Job 13:15)
This is such a powerful, moving, statement of faithfulness.
I like to think of myself as a man with ‘more than average’ faith. I have saw the Lord answer many prayers, but I have to be honest and say that this is a level faith I am not sure many believers, including myself, have yet to obtain.
“Even if he don’t…” I will still serve him because I know He is God alone.
I am not suggesting that God will or should try any believer to this level. Only that a sobering point is made very clear here. That point being that we should never give up on our faith in the Lord.
We pray, We fast, We believe, We wait, and when all else fails as Ephesians says, We Stand, knowing that whatever happens God is faithful and ultimately we will be delivered.
Lord thank you for your faithfulness, to hear and move on our behalf, and thank you that you teach us here that you will always show up. But, Lord we thank you also that you are a God that gives great grace and ability to Stand in the midst of the most difficult of circumstances, as we wait upon your deliverance.
God bless you today and my the Lord ever draw us closer to him. In Christ name. Amen.
